You do not have to post 1200×675 px images on X. Here is X's official 2:1 to 3:4 ratio range for single images, how multi-image posts differ, and the 400×400 px profile photo and 1500×500 px header sizes.
Contents (10)
When you post a single image to X (formerly Twitter), you do not have to make it exactly 1200×675 px. X's official help says that a single image with a standard aspect ratio between 2:1 and 3:4 can be shown without cropping.
1200×675 px is a convenient size for a 16:9 landscape image, but it is not a fixed size X requires for every image you post. Choose landscape, square, or portrait to suit what is in the image.
For a single image, decide the ratio before the pixels
| Shape | Example size to create | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape 16:9 | 1200×675 px | Diagrams, announcements, video promos |
| Square 1:1 | 1080×1080 px | Product images or photos you will use on several platforms |
| Portrait 4:5 | 1080×1350 px | When you want to show vertical information on a phone |
| Portrait 3:4 | 900×1200 px | Vertical artwork or photos |
These numbers are examples to make the ratios concrete, not fixed pixel sizes recommended by X. What X's help describes as "shown without cropping" is the standard aspect ratio range of 2:1 to 3:4 for a single image. That does not mean every detail of how the image looks is fixed across every surface and device.

Why 1200×675 px is so common
The defining feature of 1200×675 px is its 16:9 ratio. It makes it easy to create diagrams with text and images side by side, landscape assets shared with YouTube and similar platforms, and landscape photos.
On the other hand, if you already have a square or portrait image that fits X's display conditions, there is no need to recrop it to landscape just to post it. If cropping would cut off the top or bottom of a piece of artwork or a person and change what the image says, keeping the original ratio is a perfectly reasonable choice.
What to check if you want to avoid automatic cropping
- Important text, faces, and the whole of the artwork fit within the visible area.
- The image makes sense not only on its own but also in the preview on the compose screen.
- Changing the ratio has not cut off notes on a chart or labels at the edges.
- Small text is still readable when the image is scaled down for a smaller screen.
Using an "X-specific size" does not automatically make an image look better. Decide what the image needs to communicate first, then choose the ratio that serves it.
Posts with two or more images look different
X lets you attach several images to one post, but in the timeline they are arranged in a grid, which is a different situation from a single image. So do not stretch the 2:1 to 3:4 guidance for single images into a guarantee that each of four images will be shown in full.
For a multi-image post, aim for a layout where the center of each image is clear in the initial grid and the details are readable once someone opens an image. If a diagram is just rows of small text, check it on the compose screen and split it up if needed.
X's help also explains that when you select two or more images, you can press and hold to change their order.
Check file size and format separately
The number of bytes in a file and the image's pixel dimensions are different things. You cannot reason that an image is 1200×675 px, so it must be under 5 MB. File size varies with whether it is a photo, how detailed a graphic is, the file format, and the compression quality.
For regular image posts, check the current file size limits and formats in X's official help. If a file is too large, consider JPEG or similar for photos and PNG or similar for text-heavy graphics or images with transparency, then check how it looks after posting.
For handling size limits and checking quality, see How to Reduce Image File Size Without Ruining the Quality.
Profile photos and headers have their own specs
X gives the following numbers for profile images:
| Use | Official recommended size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Profile photo | 400×400 px | Maximum file size is 2 MB |
| Header image | 1500×500 px | Part of it may be cut off depending on the device or browser |
For header images, X explains that even at the recommended 1500×500 px, the top and bottom may be cut off on some screens. Do not put important text or faces right at the edges, and check both the settings screen and your actual profile.

When Karuku's X preset is useful
Karuku, oka-project's image compression and resizing tool, has a landscape preset for X at 1200×675 px.
It is a practical preset for producing 16:9 images under consistent settings. It does not mean X has specified that every image should be 1200×675 px.
If you already have an image with a suitable ratio and file size, you can simply use it as is. Consider the preset when you want several images to share the same landscape format, when you want to cut file size, or when you want to make sharing copies in bulk.
Do not test single and multi-image posts with the same image
The visible area for a single-image post and the cropping on the compose screen for two or more images are not the same conditions. Do not assume how an image will look in the timeline while its key text or people are pushed to the edges.
As test copies before posting, preparing these three patterns makes the decision easier:
| Post pattern | Test image example | What to look at |
|---|---|---|
| One image, landscape | 1200×675 px (16:9) | Whether the subject and text near the edges are readable in the timeline |
| One image, portrait | 900×1200 px (3:4) | Whether vertical information gets hidden |
| Two or more images | The same image used several times | Whether the subject gets cut off when the images are shown side by side |
These numbers are example sizes for testing, not pixel sizes X requires for every post. After exporting, check not only the dimensions and file size but also the actual compose screen, using a draft or preview.
Checklist before posting
- Is this a single-image post or a multi-image grid?
- Do you really need to change the original image's ratio?
- Are important parts, such as text, faces, or products, cut off in the preview?
- Are the file size and format within the limits in X's current help?
- For multiple images: the order, and how readable each image is when opened.
- Did you keep the original file and post a copy instead of overwriting it?
FAQ
Is 1200×675 px required on X?
No. It is a practical 16:9 example, but X's official help says single images with a standard aspect ratio between 2:1 and 3:4 are shown without cropping.
Can I post a square image?
Yes. 1:1 falls within that range. If recropping to landscape would cut off something important, keeping the original square is a valid choice.
Are profile photos the same size as post images?
No. The official recommendation is 400×400 px for profile photos and 1500×500 px for headers.

For images you post, separating the use (single image, multiple images, or profile) and checking the ratio and preview is more reliable than memorizing a fixed pixel size.
